The most common cause of tendon inflammation is overuse of the hamstrings. It results from repetitive stress placed on your hamstring muscles and tendons during active sports, especially when running, kicking, jumping, or quick "start/stop" motions.
Overloading or overexerting your legs by doing too much too soon, and too quickly can also be a cause. This sudden increase in the intensity or frequency of participation after being inactive for a while makes you susceptible to tendonitis.
Improper training techniques (running on hilly or hard surfaces), incorrect form (overstriding in running or lifting too much weight) and old equipment (worn out shoes) will also put you at more risk for injury. Previous injuries that haven't healed properly are a frequent cause of tendonitis and tendinosis.
Biomechanical issues, such as overpronation and leg length discrepancies, which affect the way you walk can put excess stress on the hamstring tendons due to the imbalanced. Other causes that can put excess strain on the hamstring tendons are:
Hamstring injuries are frustrating to live with and healing can take a long time because it's difficult to give your leg the rest it needs. This is especially true for runners and other athletes that return to their sport too early. Re-injury is common but it prolongs recovery and may also lead to permanent damage and other conditions.
Treating your hamstring tendon injury correctly is essential to getting rid of your pain and restoring function to your upper thigh, hip and knee. Proper treatment will get you back to regular activities sooner, stop your pain, and reduce the risk of future re-injury.
